Mat McHughMat McHugh, The Beautiful Girls’ founder/singer/songwriter, has just released his first solo work.  Seperatista!, includes ten songs that we think are fantastic.  Read on and enjoy getting to know Mat as he took time to answer a few questions for Rocklopedia!

(Fill in the blank) Mat McHugh’s music is ________.

Mat McHugh: Simple and true.

How did you come up with the name for the new album, Seperatista! ?

Mat McHugh: It’s kind of a play on an album by The Clash called Sandanista! crossed with the fact that I consider myself somewhat of a separatist for working outside the confines of my ‘day job’ (Australian band The Beautiful Girls).

Does the album cover art have special meaning behind it?

Mat McHugh: It has elements of things that mean a lot to me but to explain those things in simple terms would dilute some of their mysterious powers. Plus they may mean different things to somebody else and I don’t want to ruin it for them.

Whose music gets you excited now?

Mat McHugh: Lately I’ve been gettin ginto a New Zealand reggae band called Fat Freddy’s Drop. Also there is a band from Boston called State Radio that I absolutely love. One of the best rocks bands around.

What are some of your passions outside of music?

Mat McHugh: Surfing mainly. Probably if I had to pick between the two, it would be surfing.

What’s the most bizarre thing to happen while you were performing onstage?

Mat McHugh: One of my friends from Australia once got onstage with us and stood completely still and smoked cigarette after cigarette the entire show. Expressionless. Naked.

What should fans look forward to in 2009 and beyond?

Mat McHugh: Just a lot of touring and getting my name out there. I have a lot of songs ready for album number two so there will hopefully be some recording also. I just kind of want to keep busy.

Thanks Mat! We are really enjoying listening to your solo work!
