All too often rock concerts in big cities are booked in dark bars or nightclubs. That’s where we found ourselves at Nashville’s Exit/In. Even though a multitude of famous artists and bands have passed through there, the recently sold out Needtobreathe concert deserved more. This is not a review of the Exit/In but considering how impressive Needtobreathe’s performance was, it’s worth mentioning.
The concert began right on time with balladeer, Matthew Mayfield and Nashville’s own singer/songwriter, Andy Davis at the September 27, 2008 concert. Mayfield, a gifted and passionate musician, appeared grateful to share the stage with the other acts. Davis, a crowd favorite among the predominately college age audience, had the venue revved by the end of his set.
At around 11pm (the show had begun promptly at 9pm) recording artist Needtobreathe emerged as the night’s main event. They opened with You Are Here, a rocker from their Daylight album. It should be noted, they are extremely energetic and played almost nonstop for seventy minutes. Every song is a wonderful blend of soulful, southern rock. There was only one negative the whole night — at times, the sound mix did an injustice to Bear’s voice by covering it up and obscuring the powerful lyrics. Even with that, they absolutely rocked the packed house. They ended their set with the catchy, We Could Run Away from their latest album, The Heat.
The band returned for an encore with Mayfield and Davis joining them on stage. The six musicians performed a rocked out, stirring rendition of Led Zeppelin’s classic, When the Levee Breaks, that allowed each musician to display his individual talent. Then to everyone’s surprise, Needtobreathe unplugged and retreated to the balcony to play an acoustic version of Washed by the Water, a song inspired by Bear and Bo’s pastor father’s experience with his church, to a hushed crowd.
Needtobreathe is a must see act. Catch them in a venue near you.
