Chris Martin, Coldplay’s frontman and Gwyneth Paltrow pulled off a stunt most celebrities can’t manage: a truly private wedding. The couple, while expecting a baby quietly married in Southern California on the grounds of a Santa Barbara hotel on December 5, 2003. Rumors were that not even close family members were present for the ceremony.
Following the secret ceremony , the newlyweds settled into a honeymoon cottage at one of the world’s most romantic resorts, San Ysidro Ranch, the same secluded and luxurious hideaway where Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy honeymooned. Afterwards Paltrow and Martin hopped a private jet to another extraordinary getaway,Las Ventanas al Parasio in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
While in Mexico, Martin suffered a surfboard incident, and required three stitches in his forehead. But both Martin and Paltrow made it home safely to London, wearing matching wedding rings.
Chris and Gwyneth met backstage at a Coldplay concert in October 2002 and dated for over a year.
Their first child, Apple Blythe Alison Martin was born five months after their wedding on May 14, 2004. Paltrow explained why she chose the name Apple on Oprah saying that “it sounded so sweet and it conjured such a lovely picture for me – you know, applies are so sweet and they’re wholesome and it’s biblical – and I just thought it sounded so lovely and clearn! And I just thought, “Perfect!”
Their second child, Moses Bruce Anthony Martin was born on April 8, 2006 in New York City’s Mount Sinai Hospital. Moses was named after the song title Martin wrote for Paltrow shortly before their secret wedding. Moses is also her father’s Hebrew name.
In the May issue of Vogue, Paltrow revealed that she suffered from post-partum depression after the birth of Moses.
